In a bid to showcase their latest artificial intelligence technologies and services, Korea’s leading telecommunication firms, SK Telecom and KT, are gearing up to make a splash at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024, the world’s largest connectivity show.
Scheduled to take place from Feb. 26 to 29 in Spain, this year’s MWC Barcelona has chosen “Future First” as its main theme, with a focus on six key words including 5G, connectivity, and humanizing AI, to align with the rapidly expanding generative AI market.
SK Telecom has announced plans to set up a 992-square-meter booth at Fira Gran Via, the main venue, to unveil its latest AI technologies and large language models specialized for telecommunication business operators. Among the highlights are the LLM-applied virtual agent using a chatbot, spam, and smishing detection and filtering service, and an AI call center function. The company will also showcase novel technologies like Litmus Plus, an AI-based floating population analysis system, and AI Quantum Camera, which can be applied in robotics, security, and medical services. Additionally, SK Telecom will offer a virtual experience program for visitors to explore its Urban Air Mobility technology.
“We will showcase the various applications of the core AI technology we possess,” said SK Telecom CEO Yoo Young-sang. “We will pursue a fast transformation to become a global AI company with collaboration with global firms.”
KT, the country’s second-largest mobile carrier, will also be present at MWC Barcelona, showcasing its next-generation network and AI technologies. In the NEXT 5G zone, KT will present various network-related services and programs, including an Urban Air Mobility experience and AI air traffic management system. The company will also demonstrate its latest quantum cryptography technology and energy-cutting technology for telecommunication infrastructure.
“As an innovative digital technology partner, we are preparing to showcase the next-generation of ICT technology on the global stage,” said Lee Jeong-woo, KT’s public relations chief.
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is expected to participate in the event, as SK Telecom launched the Global Telco AI Alliance with three other major global telcos in July 2023. KT CEO Kim Young-shub will also attend the event, where he is expected to meet with business leaders to forge partnerships.
While LG Uplus will not set up a showroom this year, its CEO Hwang Hyeon-sik and senior executives will participate in the event and hold meetings with potential partners for collaboration, including Google and Amazon Web Service.
The growth of AI applications in the telecommunication market is expected to grow 10-fold to reach $17.1 billion by the year 2031, according to Polaris Market Research, a US-based market tracker. With Korea’s telecommunication giants leading the charge, MWC Barcelona 2024 promises to be a showcase of cutting-edge AI innovations and future connectivity solutions.
