At Semicon Korea 2025, German technology leader Merck unveiled its cutting-edge AI-driven chip materials platform, marking a major leap in semiconductor innovation. This breakthrough has significantly slashed research and development timelines for critical chip materials, redefining how advanced semiconductors are designed and manufactured. Speaking at a press conference, Anand Nambiar, Merck Electronics’ chief commercial officer, emphasized the indispensable role of materials in AI’s progress. “AI’s potential hinges on powerful, compact, and energy-efficient chips, but this complexity demands revolutionary materials solutions,” he said. Merck’s latest advancements aim to tackle these challenges head-on, ensuring faster, smarter, and more efficient semiconductor production.
By harnessing AI and data digitalization, Merck’s Materials Intelligence platform is transforming traditional research methodologies. Instead of relying solely on time-consuming physical experiments, the company now leverages simulations to accelerate basic chemistry research. “Data-driven insights are helping us solve long-standing industry challenges,” Nambiar noted. As demand for AI chips skyrockets, Merck is strategically integrating material science with AI to develop next-generation semiconductor solutions, including Gate All-Around transistors, high-density memory, and HBM chips. Alongside innovation, the company is doubling down on facility investments, particularly in thin-film materials and specialty gases, to strengthen its technological edge.
Despite global shifts in semiconductor policies, particularly under the new U.S. administration, Merck remains focused on Asia, where 80 percent of semiconductor capacity is concentrated. Korea and Taiwan continue to lead in advanced chip manufacturing, and Merck is committed to supporting this ecosystem. During Semicon Korea, the company showcased its latest material solutions for advanced logic chips and high-density memory, reinforcing its 36-year partnership with Korean customers. “With our new SOD Application Center in Anseong and expanded operations in Eumseong, we are investing in Korea’s future,” said Kim Woo-kyu, managing director of Merck Korea. As one of the largest players in the Korean semiconductor market, Merck’s commitment to innovation, investment, and collaboration remains stronger than ever.
