In a move set to illuminate the future of renewable energy in the United States, Canadian Solar, a prominent solar power product manufacturing company, has unveiled ambitious plans to construct an $800 million solar production facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. This major development is poised to bring about a significant economic upswing, creating hundreds of new job opportunities in the Louisville area while making substantial strides in solar photovoltaic cell production.
This groundbreaking project, the company’s second production facility in the United States, will be situated at the River Ridge Commerce Center. According to a news release from One Southern Indiana, it is projected to generate approximately 1,200 jobs in the region, thereby fostering both economic growth and the progression of renewable energy technologies in the area.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, “Indiana’s strong advanced manufacturing sector positions the state to help lead the global energy transition, developing and powering new solutions in batteries, solar, and hydrogen.” He further highlighted the significance of Canadian Solar’s new location in Jeffersonville, emphasizing its role in engaging the skilled Hoosier workforce in the production of solar power components. This, in turn, will make energy-efficient solar panels more accessible to consumers across the country.
The facility is slated to have the capacity to produce a staggering 20,000 high-power solar panels each day. These panels will then be transported to the company’s module assembly facility in Texas, contributing to the supply of solar power infrastructure across the nation. Production is expected to commence by the end of 2025, with the hiring process anticipated to start by mid-2024.
Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore conveyed his pride in the city being chosen as the site for this remarkable venture. He expressed excitement at the prospect of drawing in more skilled workers to the area, saying, “Not only are they making a large financial investment into our community, but they will also become one of the largest single-site employers in the Greater Louisville region.” Mayor Moore’s enthusiasm was palpable as he hailed Canadian Solar as a global industry leader bringing enormous potential to their community through their groundbreaking solar products.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) has lent its support to Canadian Solar’s venture, committing substantial investments to foster its success. The IEDC has pledged up to $9.7 million in conditional tax credits and up to $400,000 in conditional training grants. Additionally, they have provided up to $2 million in conditional redevelopment tax credits and up to $200,000 in Manufacturing Readiness Grants. These incentives are performance-based, meaning that Canadian Solar will be eligible to claim state benefits once they make the necessary investments and hire and train employees.
The City of Jeffersonville and the River Ridge Development Authority have also joined forces to offer further incentives, showcasing the widespread support for this ambitious renewable energy project.
