During French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to India, Tata Group and Airbus signed a landmark agreement to jointly manufacture civilian helicopters, marking a significant step in the strategic partnership between India and France.
The deal, announced by Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, extends the existing collaboration between Tata and Airbus, which currently includes the production of C-295 transport aircraft in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.
Under the new agreement, Tata and Airbus will establish a final assembly line (FAL) for the production of H125 helicopters with a substantial indigenous and localization component. This move aligns with India’s broader efforts to boost domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce reliance on imports in the defense and aerospace sectors.
Airbus revealed that the helicopters manufactured at the FAL will not only cater to the Indian market but also be exported to neighboring countries, enhancing India’s role as a regional hub for aerospace manufacturing.
The construction of the FAL is expected to take 24 months, with deliveries slated to commence in 2026. The location of the facility will be determined through mutual deliberations between Tata and Airbus.
In addition to the helicopter manufacturing pact, discussions during Macron’s visit also encompassed further cooperation in the defense sector. Officials indicated that talks included the potential involvement of French engine maker Safran in the production of fighter jet engines in India, emphasizing a commitment to technology transfer and collaboration.
France currently ranks as India’s second-largest arms supplier, with a long-standing partnership in defense procurement. The discussions with Safran underscore India’s efforts to enhance its indigenous defense production capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign imports.
The timing of Macron’s visit, coinciding with India’s annual Republic Day celebrations, symbolizes the growing strategic partnership between the two nations. Macron’s emphasis on greater French engagement in the Asia-Pacific aligns with India’s evolving role as a key player in the region, especially in the context of geopolitical shifts and the evolving global security landscape.
