In a recent development, Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, revealed that long-form videos would soon be available on smart televisions through his social network, X. This announcement follows a report by Fortune magazine, stating that X is planning to launch a TV app next week for Amazon and Samsung users.
X has been gradually expanding its services, having rolled out an early version of video and audio calling for some users last October. Musk has previously expressed his intention to transform X into a super app offering a range of services from messaging to peer-to-peer payments. In response to a user’s query on X about the availability of long-form videos on smart TVs, Musk simply stated, “Coming soon.”
Fortune’s report suggested that X’s TV app could resemble the one offered by Google’s YouTube. The report also mentioned an unidentified source claiming that Musk is determined to compete with YouTube in the video streaming space.
Despite the lack of an official response from X for further details on the app, the platform has been actively pursuing its goal of becoming a “video-first platform.” X has been forming partnerships with notable figures such as former Fox commentator Tucker Carlson and former CNN anchor Don Lemon.
Since Musk acquired X in 2022, the platform has faced challenges in retaining advertisers due to various controversies. However, in a bid to attract advertisers, X announced last month that it would allow them to run video ads alongside content from certain creators.
With these latest developments, it appears that X is positioning itself to compete more aggressively in the digital video space, leveraging Musk’s vision for the platform’s future.
