Spotify is diving headfirst into the world of artificial intelligence. After introducing an AI-driven DJ earlier this year, the streaming giant is now in the experimental phase of creating playlists based on user prompts.
This intriguing discovery originated from a keen-eyed product designer and hashtag pioneer, Chris Messina. Messina shared screenshots from Spotify’s backend, revealing lines of code referencing an “AI Playlist” feature and the phrase “Get playlists based on your prompts.” Whenever this new feature eventually sees the light of day, it might resemble a Spotify-specific version of ChatGPT. Messina even speculated that it could be integrated into Spotify Blend, where two users can blend their musical preferences to generate playlists that guess each other’s favorite songs.
However, Spotify remains tight-lipped about this development, with a spokesperson stating that they refrain from commenting on speculations and have no new information to share.
Previously, Spotify experimented with description-based playlists through Niche Mixes, which were launched last spring. These Niche Mixes aimed to create personalized playlists based on user descriptions, but it’s important to note that they did not rely on AI; instead, they used Spotify’s personalization algorithms.
In February, Spotify introduced an AI-powered DJ that some found annoying. This DJ plays songs it believes the user will like but interrupts the music with cheeky remarks, potentially disrupting the listening experience. Notably, this AI DJ was not entirely built from scratch by Spotify; it emerged as a result of their acquisition of Sonatic, a London-based tech company specializing in AI voices, rather than relying solely on AI technology.
