Mexican airports will be impacted by government-imposed fee changes, affecting not only charges for airline passengers but also the entire tariff system.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s administration has made changes to the formula that determines price caps for airport tariffs, including the TUA passenger fee. This will also affect airport services such as runway usage and leasing spaces. However, the companies are currently awaiting a meeting with the Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport Ministry to fully understand the impact, as the government’s paperwork was not clear.

The companies have expressed that the changes were made unilaterally, deviating from the usual negotiation process every five years.

The three publicly traded airport operators, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste SAB, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico SAB, and Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte SAB, are currently studying the situation and have not provided further details.

The ministry has not responded to requests for comment. As a result of these developments, shares of the airport operators have experienced significant declines, with some reaching record-breaking drops. It is important to note that a substantial portion of the operators’ revenues in Mexico stem from TUAs.
