In a surprising twist, U.S. software giant Microsoft has unveiled plans to sprinkle a hefty $2.1 billion into Spain’s tech landscape over the next couple of years. Brad Smith, the company’s Vice Chair and President, casually dropped this bombshell on social media site X, sending shockwaves through the industry.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of Microsoft’s recent reveal of a 3.2 billion euros ($3.45 billion) investment in Germany, all geared towards ramping up its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. When pressed for more details about the Spanish investment, Microsoft remained tight-lipped, failing to respond to a Reuters request for further information.

Smith, however, was keen to highlight the broader significance of the move. “Our investment goes beyond just building data centers; it’s a testament to our 37-year love affair with Spain,” he exclaimed. “It’s about ensuring the security and digital transformation of Spain’s government, businesses, and people.”
