Leaders from across Europe have rallied behind Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for peace, confirming their participation in a landmark global summit set to take place in Switzerland. The summit, scheduled for June 15-16, will be a crucial platform for discussing peace efforts in Ukraine, focusing on Zelensky’s 10-point peace formula which advocates for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied Ukrainian territories.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, along with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, have all pledged their support and participation in the summit following phone conversations with President Zelensky on May 8.
During his call with Chancellor Scholz, President Zelensky emphasized the importance of continued defense cooperation between Ukraine and Germany, as well as discussed preparations for the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference. Prime Minister Frederiksen of Denmark and President Zelensky focused their discussion on crucial areas such as ammunition supplies, support for Ukraine’s energy sector, and the expedited transfer of F-16 jets to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Prime Minister Rutte of the Netherlands was thanked by President Zelensky for the recent military aid package worth one billion euros ($1.07 billion), further solidifying the bond between the two nations. President Zelensky also expressed gratitude to Secretary General Buric for the Council of Europe’s efforts, including the establishment of the Register of Damage in Kyiv and plans to create a special tribunal on Russian war crimes.
The participation of these key leaders and the continued support from the international community underscore a unified commitment to achieving peace and stability in Ukraine. Cape Verde’s recent decision to participate in the summit further highlights the global significance and reach of this pivotal gathering, as it strives to bring an end to the conflict and pave the way for a peaceful future in Ukraine.
