Huawei Technologies has taken a bold step in reviving its global smartphone business by introducing the Mate XT, the world’s first trifold smartphone, in Malaysia. The launch event in Kuala Lumpur marked the start of the international roll-out of this cutting-edge 5G device, highlighting Huawei’s determination to regain ground in the global market despite ongoing US sanctions. With nearly 1,000 attendees, including media representatives and business partners from across Asia and the Middle East, the grand unveiling demonstrated the company’s commitment to innovation and expansion.
The Mate XT, originally launched in China on September 20, has already generated significant buzz, especially as it debuted on the same day as Apple’s iPhone 16. Huawei confidently promoted the device as a game-changer, boasting the industry’s largest foldable display and sleekest design for a trifold smartphone. Alongside the Mate XT, the company showcased an array of new products, including the MatePad Pro tablet, the Huawei Band 10 wearable, and the FreeArc earphones, reinforcing its diversified approach to consumer technology.
Priced at €3,499 (US$3,668) for the 1-terabyte model, the Mate XT is expected to cater to premium users looking for cutting-edge design and performance. Unlike its Chinese counterpart, which runs on HarmonyOS, the international version will operate on an Android-based EMUI system, though it will lack Google Play support. Despite limited availability in China, the Mate XT’s overseas release signals Huawei’s ambition to capture more market share outside its home turf. The company has remained tight-lipped about the device’s processor, but experts believe it is powered by the in-house-developed Kirin 9010 5G chipset.
Huawei’s resurgence in the smartphone sector is evident, with the company securing the No. 2 spot in China’s market last year, commanding a 16% share and shipping 46 million units. While Oppo led the market and Apple followed in third place, Huawei’s strong sales reflect its ability to withstand geopolitical challenges. With total revenue surpassing 860 billion yuan (US$118.3 billion) in 2023—one of its highest figures to date—Huawei continues to defy obstacles, leveraging its technological expertise to carve a path forward in the global arena.
