Tennis icon Serena Williams is making waves once again, this time by expanding her influence into women’s basketball. On Monday, the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Toronto Tempo announced that Williams has acquired an ownership stake in the team. The Tempo, Canada’s first-ever WNBA expansion team, is set to make its league debut in 2026, backed by Larry Tanenbaum of Kilmer Sports Ventures. Williams, a longtime advocate for women’s sports, emphasized her enthusiasm for the investment, calling it an opportunity to help shape a lasting legacy.
Beyond ownership, Williams is expected to leave her mark on the team’s branding and aesthetics, playing a key role in developing jersey designs and merchandise collaborations. Teresa Resch, president of the Tempo Basketball Club, praised Williams’ involvement, calling her the “greatest athlete of all time” and highlighting the significant impact she will have on the franchise and Canadian basketball as a whole. While the financial details of her stake remain undisclosed, her presence alone is expected to bring major visibility and excitement to the new team. The agreement is currently pending final league approval.
Since retiring from professional tennis in 2022, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has built an impressive business portfolio, further solidifying her influence beyond sports. Williams already holds minority ownership in Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, and the Los Angeles Golf Club under TGL. With her latest investment in the WNBA, Williams continues to champion women’s sports, proving that her legacy extends far beyond the tennis court.
