Osaka, Japan, is once again at the center of global attention as it hosts Expo 2025, a World Expo running from April 13 to October 13, 2025, on the artificial Yumeshima Island in Osaka Bay. This marks the second time Osaka welcomes the world for such an event, 55 years after its landmark Expo 1970. Organizers expect around 28 million visitors to experience the six-month celebration of innovation, culture, and international collaboration.

The overarching theme of Expo 2025 is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” with subthemes of “Saving Lives,” “Empowering Lives,” and “Connecting Lives.” These themes reflect the Expo’s ambition to serve as a laboratory for addressing global challenges, from health and sustainability to digital transformation and social inclusion. The event aligns closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and Japan’s own Society 5.0 vision, which seeks to integrate advanced technology and human-centric values for a “super smart society”.

Expo 2025 features participation from more than 160 countries, regions, and organizations, each presenting their vision of the future inside about 80 architecturally distinctive pavilions. The centerpiece of the site is the Grand Ring, now recognized as the largest wooden architectural structure in the world, designed to symbolize unity in diversity and facilitate intuitive movement throughout the venue. Notable pavilions include innovative contributions from the United States, Japan, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, and many others, each exploring themes of culture, technology, and environmental responsibility.

Beyond its architectural marvels and technological showcases, Expo 2025 aims to foster meaningful dialogue and inspire collective action on pressing global issues. Through exhibitions, performances, and interactive experiences, visitors are invited to reflect on what constitutes a fulfilling life and how societies can co-create a sustainable and inclusive future. As Osaka reclaims its role as a global stage, Expo 2025 stands as a testament to the enduring power of international cooperation and visionary thinking.
