Greece’s tourism industry has experienced a remarkable upswing in 2024, breaking records in both visitor arrivals and travel revenues. The country welcomed 40.7 million international visitors-a 12.8% increase from the previous year-while tourism earnings soared to 21.7 billion euros, up 5.3% from 2023. This growth was fueled by a combination of increased arrivals, particularly from the UK, Germany, and Italy, and a strategic push to expand travel beyond the traditional summer months, resulting in a 23.7% rise in off-peak flight volumes compared to pre-pandemic levels. Notably, the Ionian Islands, including Zakynthos and Corfu, emerged as standout destinations, recording a 5.5% rise in visitors and attracting both package tourists and independent travelers.
Looking ahead to 2025, Greece’s travel sector is poised for even greater success, bolstered by expanding air connectivity and the diversification of its source markets. Scheduled international air seats for summer 2025 have increased by 4.6%, with the UK and Germany leading in bookings, followed by Italy, the U.S., and Israel-each showing significant year-on-year growth. The country is also witnessing a surge in travelers from emerging markets such as Saudi Arabia, Albania, Armenia, and Georgia, reflecting Greece’s growing appeal across Southeast Europe and the Middle East. Meanwhile, the Chinese market is set to play a pivotal role, with new direct flights and streamlined visa processes expected to drive a record influx of Chinese tourists, further cementing Greece’s status as a top European destination.
Despite these achievements, the sector faces some challenges, including a decline in average spending per trip and shorter stays, as well as mixed performance in traditional hotspots like Santorini and Mykonos. However, the overall outlook remains highly positive. The industry’s ability to attract both traditional and new markets, extend the tourism season, and adapt to evolving traveler preferences-such as the rise in self-booked vacations-positions Greece for sustained growth. As the nation continues to innovate and diversify, its tourism sector is set to remain a key driver of economic prosperity in 2025 and beyond.
