Estonian medtech startup Better Medicine, secured a €1 million in pre-seed funding to support its European expansion. The company has unveiled a groundbreaking AI-powered tool that is transforming the early detection of kidney cancer across radiology departments in Europe. The solution, recently awarded CE certification under the EU Medical Device Regulation, leverages advanced deep learning to autonomously analyze CT scans, identify, measure, and classify kidney tumors with high accuracy. Clinical studies show that radiologists collaborating with the software detected kidney tumors in up to 99.2% of sample cases and measured tumors 52% faster than traditional methods—a significant step forward in combating diagnostic delays and workforce shortages.
Kidney cancer presents a growing challenge in Estonia, with over 41.5% of cases diagnosed at late stages, drastically reducing treatment options. Responding to this urgent need, Better Medicine’s technology acts as a “second set of eyes, multiplied by 1,000,” tirelessly supporting doctors and reducing the risk of missed diagnoses. By automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks, the tool enables radiologists to devote more focus to complex clinical decisions, thus improving patient care while reducing professional burnout. Its robust training on anonymized patient CT scans and close collaboration with local and international hospitals underpin its reliability and broad applicability.
Looking ahead, Better Medicine is gearing up for expansion beyond Estonia, with fresh funding to accelerate its European rollout and FDA clearance for the U.S. market. The startup also aims to broaden its applications into other abdominal cancers and support drug research, tracking treatment responses via imaging. At its core, the company’s AI kidney cancer tool marks a leap toward intelligent, accessible cancer diagnostics—making a real impact on patient outcomes and the future of medical practice.
