South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, was found dead in Paris today, shocking both diplomatic circles and the South African community. The 58-year-old diplomat’s body was discovered outside the Hyatt Hotel in Porte Maillot, a prominent district on the city’s west side. French authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, which is believed to be the result of jumping from the 22nd floor of the hotel, according to local reports.

Mthethwa had reportedly gone missing on Monday, prompting his wife to alert authorities after receiving a disturbing message from him. He was a seasoned public servant, formerly serving as South Africa’s Minister of Arts and Culture and later as Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture before his appointment as ambassador in February 2024. His absence was first noticed when he failed to attend weekend diplomatic meetings in Paris. The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation is expected to release an official statement soon as Paris police pursue further investigation into this tragic event.

Known for his leadership within the African National Congress and years of public service, Mthethwa’s death has raised questions about the wellbeing of public officials stationed abroad and the pressures they face. Diplomatic communities across France and South Africa have expressed deep sorrow at the loss of an experienced envoy whose career spanned decades of dedicated national service. The probe by French authorities will determine the exact causes and circumstances, but early reports strongly suggest suicide.
