South Korea’s LG Energy Solution has entered into a significant agreement with China’s Chery Automobile, marking a milestone as the first major Korean battery supply deal with a Chinese automaker for next-generation cylindrical batteries. Under the six-year contract, LG Energy Solution will supply Chery with 8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of its advanced 46-series cylindrical batteries, enough to power approximately 120,000 electric vehicles (EVs). Deliveries are set to begin in early 2026, with the batteries destined for Chery’s flagship electric models.

The 46-series cylindrical batteries represent a leap forward in battery technology, offering at least five times the energy capacity and output of conventional cylindrical cells. These nickel, cobalt, and manganese (NCM) batteries also provide higher energy density, enhanced charging efficiency, and superior performance in cold-weather conditions compared to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) alternatives commonly used by Chinese manufacturers. LG’s proprietary technology is expected to give Chery’s EVs a competitive edge in driving range and rapid charging capabilities.

Industry analysts estimate the value of the deal at over 1 trillion won (about $735 million), highlighting the scale and strategic importance of this partnership for both companies. For LG Energy Solution, the agreement not only opens the door to the Chinese EV market—long dominated by domestic giants like CATL and BYD—but also serves as a catalyst for expanding the global adoption of its new 46-series batteries. For Chery, the deal secures a steady supply of high-performance batteries to support its ambitious EV export and growth plans.

Both companies have expressed intentions to broaden their collaboration beyond flagship models, potentially including additional Chery EVs in the future. This partnership underscores the growing interdependence between global battery suppliers and automakers as the EV market continues to evolve rapidly. As LG Energy Solution ramps up production of its 46-series cells, this deal is poised to reshape the competitive landscape of the EV battery sector in China and beyond.
