South Korea’s kimchi export industry is experiencing a remarkable surge, with data revealing a 10 percent year-on-year increase in outbound shipments through October of this year. As the nation anticipates the year-end figures, experts project that 2023 could witness a record-breaking level of kimchi exports.

According to data compiled by the Korea Customs Service, the total value of kimchi exports reached $130 million from January to October, a significant rise from the $118.6 million recorded during the same period the previous year. Kimchi, a traditional Korean side dish known for its distinctive flavor derived from fermented cabbage, salt, and hot peppers, has become a staple consumed with nearly every meal in Korean households.

The surge in kimchi exports is attributed to a growing global appreciation for Korean cuisine, with the dish gaining popularity among diverse consumer groups. Health-conscious consumers, in particular, contributed to a spike in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, driving kimchi exports to a record high of $159 million in 2021.

Experts closely monitoring the current trend suggest that 2023 might witness a new record if the momentum continues. The adaptability and health benefits associated with kimchi are becoming increasingly appealing to international consumers seeking flavorful and nutritious food options.

The data also reveals a noteworthy expansion in the number of destination countries. Over the January-October period, kimchi found its way to 93 nations, up from 87 countries during the same period the previous year. This indicates a broadening global reach for the beloved Korean dish.

By destination, Japan emerged as the leading importer, accounting for 40.5 percent of kimchi exports during the 10-month period. The United States, the Netherlands, Britain, and Hong Kong followed suit, illustrating the dish’s popularity across continents.

The global demand for kimchi is not only a testament to the dish’s unique taste but also a reflection of South Korea’s successful efforts in promoting its culinary traditions on the international stage. As kimchi continues to tantalize taste buds worldwide, South Korea is poised to make 2023 a landmark year for the export of its iconic fermented delicacy.
