In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce air pollution in Manila, Japanese telecommunications giant KDDI has announced its involvement in the development of the city’s first subway. The ambitious project, known as the Metro Manila Subway Project, is a collaborative effort between the Japanese and Philippine governments, with KDDI taking a pivotal role in constructing essential telecom and fare collection systems.
KDDI’s responsibilities encompass the construction of crucial telecom infrastructure, including pipe components and cabling, to ensure seamless connectivity throughout the subway network. Additionally, the company will oversee the installation of servers and equipment for fare collection, such as ticket gates and vending machines, streamlining the commuting experience for passengers. While the financial details of the project remain undisclosed, it is evident that KDDI’s involvement signifies a significant investment in Manila’s transportation infrastructure.
The Metro Manila Subway Project, spearheaded by the Philippines’ Department of Transportation and supported by the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., aims to address the capital’s growing transportation needs. Covering approximately 30 kilometers and comprising 15 stations from East Valenzuela to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s Terminal 3, the subway will serve as a vital artery for the city’s transportation network.
