American Airlines is soaring to new heights with its latest changes, including a hike in bag fees and restrictions on earning frequent flyer miles. The airline announced on Tuesday that passengers will now pay $35 to check a first bag for domestic flights if booked online in advance, or $40 if purchased at the airport, up from the previous $30. A second checked bag will cost $45, an increase from $40, regardless of when it’s purchased.
For flights between the U.S. and Canada, the Caribbean, or Mexico, the fee for a first checked bag will be $35, whether purchased online or at the airport. These changes mark the first bag fee increase in more than five years for American Airlines.
Despite these increases, frequent flyer members with elite status and some American Airlines credit card holders will still enjoy a complimentary checked bag. Additionally, the airline is easing the burden for travelers with slightly overweight bags, reducing the fee for bags up to three pounds over the 50-pound limit from $100 to $30.
In another move aimed at driving traffic to its website, American Airlines will limit which tickets purchased through third parties are eligible to earn AAdvantage frequent flyer miles. Starting in April, only bookings made through preferred travel agencies will earn these rewards credits. Customers purchasing basic economy tickets will only earn frequent flyer miles if they book directly through American Airlines’ website.
These changes come as airlines seek ways to increase revenue amidst a decline in airfare prices over the past year. American Airlines last raised bag fees in September 2018, along with other major carriers. The airline industry continues to adapt to evolving market conditions, and these latest moves by American Airlines are part of its strategy to stay competitive and enhance its offerings to passengers.
