Airport train project worth 9 billion-peso ($158 million) secured by Japan’s Mitsubishi

Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp, a global integrated business enterprise, has secured a 9-billion-peso ($158 million) contract to supply new generation trains for the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) and the airport express for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR). The Department of Transportation (DOTr) issued Contract Package (CP) NS-03 to Mitsubishi, granting them the contract to provide rolling stock for both the northern section — Malolos-Clark Railway Project — and southern end — South Commuter Railway Project — of the NSCR.

Mitsubishi, in collaboration with Spanish manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), submitted a joint bid for CP NS-03. They had previously worked together on the Generation 4 trains for LRT-1. Now, they will be responsible for manufacturing airport trains that will connect Clark International Airport to Alabang, with stops along the way. This project aims to facilitate smoother transfers between Clark and Manila airports through the limited express of the NSCR, as per the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) objectives.

Mitsubishi and CAF are set to receive nearly P9 billion from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for CP NS-03, which will be paid in three currencies: P844.49 million, 125.45 million euros (equivalent to P7.5 billion), and $3.39 million (equivalent to P193 million).

In addition to this project, they had previously collaborated on manufacturing Generation 4 trains for LRT-1, capable of speeds up to 70 kilometers per hour and accommodating nearly 1,400 passengers per trip. LRMC plans to operate a fleet of 30 Gen 4 trains upon full delivery.

Mitsubishi and CAF have a track record of securing railway contracts across Asia and the Pacific, including a $663 million deal for train sets in Yangon, Myanmar, and operating the Canberra Light Rail Transit. They have also contributed to the Istanbul Metro, one of Turkey’s largest railways.

Upon its completion in 2028, the NSCR will span approximately 147 kilometers, connecting New Clark City with Calamba and covering three regions in Luzon.

The ongoing rail transit developments in Manila, mark a significant stride toward modernizing the country’s transportation infrastructure.
