In a twist that has left political analysts and voters alike stunned, President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he is ending his bid for reelection. The decision comes amid growing pressure from Democratic leaders who had been increasingly vocal about their concerns over Biden’s ability to beat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.

The announcement, delivered from Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he has been self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19, has plunged the 2024 race into a state of uncertainty. Vice President Kamala Harris is now widely seen as the most likely candidate to take Biden’s place at the top of the Democratic ticket.

In a heartfelt letter to the American people, Biden expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” he wrote. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down and to focus solely on my duties as President for the rest of my term.” He endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee in a separate statement on X, and promised to address the nation later in the week to provide more details about his decision.

This dramatic turn of events comes after a particularly challenging period for Biden. Despite his initial defiance in the face of mounting calls from Democratic lawmakers for his withdrawal, a disastrous debate with Trump on June 27 heightened scrutiny over the President’s mental fitness. Biden’s announcement marks an extraordinary shift for a man who has dedicated nearly five decades to public service, beginning with his upset victory for a U.S. Senate seat in Delaware in 1972, and including 36 years as a senator and eight years as Vice President under Barack Obama.

Reflecting on his presidency, Biden touted the achievements of his administration, including building what he described as the “strongest economy in the world,” lowering prescription drug prices, expanding healthcare, tackling climate change, and appointing the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

With less than 110 days until Election Day, the Democratic National Committee must now scramble to choose an alternative nominee to challenge Trump, whose polling lead has grown as Democrats have battled internally. Biden’s decision to step aside marks the end of a long and storied career in Washington, a career that began in 1972 and has seen him rise to the highest office in the land, defeat Trump in 2020, and now, leave a legacy that will be debated for years to come.
