Ireland is fast becoming a global hub for automotive safety technology, with two Galway-based innovators—FotoNation and CameraMatics—driving advancements in AI-powered sensors designed to prevent car crashes. Both companies have recently received a major boost, securing €6 million in funding from the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) to accelerate the development and deployment of their next-generation solutions.

FotoNation, a pioneer in ultra-low power, high-efficiency computer vision AI, brings decades of experience and over 1,000 patents to the field. Its imaging and sensor fusion technologies are already embedded in more than 3.6 billion devices worldwide, and the company is now focused on its third-generation image processing core. This new platform is optimized for edge devices, enabling sustainable AI inference and real-time hazard detection in automotive cameras and sensors. FotoNation’s solutions are designed to deliver precise object recognition, driver monitoring, and collision avoidance—all while maintaining minimal power consumption, a key requirement for modern vehicles.

CameraMatics complements this with its Intelligent Driver Assistance System (i-DAS), which integrates AI cameras, telematics, and behavioral analysis to provide 360-degree vehicle awareness. The system actively monitors for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users, while also tracking driver fatigue and distraction. Real-time alerts and driver coaching have led to significant reductions in speeding, harsh braking, and other risky behaviors among fleet operators. The new funding will help CameraMatics enhance its Genie Pro dashcam, expand its AI analytics, and integrate further with FotoNation’s cutting-edge imaging hardware.

The €6 million DTIF investment not only strengthens Ireland’s position in the global automotive safety sector but also supports the Vision Zero initiative to eliminate road fatalities. By combining FotoNation’s advanced computer vision with CameraMatics’ real-time fleet safety platform, the two companies are set to deliver comprehensive, AI-driven solutions that proactively prevent collisions, protect vulnerable road users, and transform road safety standards in Ireland and beyond.
