Apple has just unveiled a new Apple Pencil variant, priced at a wallet-friendly $79, offering an economical option for iPad users. This innovative stylus features a smooth matte finish, a hidden USB-C charging port, and a range of additional improvements. Pre-orders are set to kick off in early November.

The $79 Apple Pencil now complements the existing 2nd and 1st generation models, providing a more budget-conscious choice. In terms of design, this new Apple Pencil sports a matte finish similar to the second-generation model and introduces a recessed edge to enhance ergonomic comfort.

A notable distinction of the new Apple Pencil (USB-C) is its absence of magnetic wireless charging and pairing capabilities. Instead, it incorporates a concealed USB-C port beneath the cap for both pairing and charging purposes. While the Apple Pencil (USB-C) can be magnetically affixed to the side of an iPad for storage convenience, it is important to note that charging and pairing are not facilitated through this magnetic connection.

The new Apple Pencil offers several noteworthy features, including pixel-perfect precision, low latency for a natural feel, tilt sensitivity for shading, and hover capabilities on iPad Pro models with the M2 chip. It is compatible with various iPad models featuring a USB-C port, such as the iPad (10th generation), iPad Air (4th and 5th generations), various iPad Pro models, and the iPad mini (6th generation). However, it’s important to note that this model lacks some features found in other Apple Pencil variants, like the double-tap tool switching available only in the 2nd generation and pressure sensitivity and wireless pairing/charging present in both the 1st and 2nd generations.

In summary, the new Apple Pencil offers precise, responsive, and versatile drawing capabilities while maintaining compatibility with a wide range of modern iPads, albeit with some feature trade-offs when compared to other Apple Pencil models.

The key driving factor for introducing the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is likely its compatibility with the base model iPad without the need for an adapter. Up until now, the base model iPad could only use the Apple Pencil (1st generation), which requires a Lightning port for charging and necessitates the use of a Lightning to USB-C dongle.

Apple has announced that the new Apple Pencil featuring USB-C support will be open for orders in early November, offering a more seamless and convenient experience for users of the base model iPad.
