This time, he’s taking legal action against OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research lab he helped co-found, and its CEO, Sam Altman. Musk alleges that OpenAI has strayed from its original mission to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity and has instead become a profit-driven subsidiary of Microsoft.
In a lawsuit filed in a San Francisco court, Musk’s lawyers argue that OpenAI’s focus on maximizing profits for Microsoft violates the founding agreement of the organization, which was established in 2015 with the goal of developing AGI for the greater good. Musk, who stepped down from OpenAI’s board in 2018, has long been vocal about the potential dangers of AI, once stating that it is “potentially more dangerous than nukes.”
According to the lawsuit, OpenAI’s website still claims to be dedicated to ensuring that AGI benefits all of humanity. However, Musk’s lawyers argue that the organization has become a closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft, working to develop AGI for the tech giant’s profit rather than for the benefit of humanity.
Microsoft, which recently announced a new partnership with French start-up Mistral AI, has not yet commented on the lawsuit. The legal action comes at a time of intense competition and hype in the AI industry, with companies like Google and Microsoft racing to develop advanced AI technologies.
Musk’s decision to sue OpenAI and its CEO reflects his ongoing commitment to ensuring that AI is developed responsibly and ethically. Despite his many other ventures, including his recent acquisition of X, Musk remains deeply involved in the world of AI, having launched his own AI company called xAI last year.
Meanwhile, Sam Altman, who has had a turbulent relationship with OpenAI, was fired from the company last year in a move that shocked the tech industry. He later returned to the firm, but the incident underscored the challenges and complexities of developing AGI in a responsible and ethical manner.
