In an unanticipated move, the French government has elevated its terror alert warning to the highest level in the aftermath of the shootings in Moscow. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal made the announcement on Sunday following a high-level meeting with senior security and defense officials alongside President Emmanuel Macron.
Attal conveyed in a social media post that the decision to raise the alert level, just months before Paris is set to host the Olympic Games, was prompted by the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility for the Moscow attack and the perceived threats against France. France’s terror alert system consists of three levels, with the highest level activated in response to an attack, either within France or abroad, or when there is an imminent threat of one.
This heightened alert status permits the implementation of extraordinary security measures, including increased patrols by armed forces in public areas such as train stations, airports, and religious sites. The move underscores France’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and visitors alike during this period of heightened security concerns.
