Pickleball, the sport that’s been steadily gaining popularity across the globe, is now setting its sights on a new horizon: India. In a groundbreaking move, the United Pickleball Association (UPA) and Global Sports have joined forces to introduce the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball (MLP) to the world’s most populous country.

This landmark deal marks the first international expansion for the United Pickleball Association, following its inception after the merger between Major League Pickleball and the Professional Pickleball Association last February. Despite the merger, both entities have maintained their distinct identities, with the PPA Tour featuring an individual bracket-style tour and MLP offering a team-based format.

The specifics of the deal have not been disclosed, but the implications are clear: the introduction of PPA Tour India and MLP India will provide a platform for players to showcase their skills on a global stage and propel the sport to new heights. Connor Pardoe, founder and CEO of the PPA Tour, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the partnership with Global Sports will not only elevate the game but also introduce it to millions of new fans.

As part of the agreement, the PPA Tour will host an official tour stop in India next February, marking the debut of a PPA Tour event in Asia. The Indian Open is expected to attract players from around the world, making it a truly international affair. Additionally, PPA Tour India will be launched, offering players ranking points at events across the country.

Meanwhile, Major League Pickleball will also make its mark in India, holding a competition that will feature a mix of local players and professionals from both MLP and the PPA Tour. This move is set to further boost the sport’s popularity in the country.

Looking ahead, the United Pickleball Association has announced plans to sell MLP franchises through an open process, with the aim of launching a full 12-team season in 2025-26. The franchises are expected to come with a hefty price tag, but the demand is likely to be high given the sport’s growing appeal.

This announcement comes on the heels of Major League Pickleball’s expansion into Australia and the continued efforts of the APP Tour to promote the sport in countries like India, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Sweden. Global Sports, a key player in bringing pickleball to India, operates courts and organizes tournaments in the country, further fueling the sport’s growth.

In conclusion, pickleball’s expansion into India represents a significant milestone in the sport’s global journey. With the combined efforts of the United Pickleball Association, Global Sports, and local enthusiasts, pickleball is poised to become a mainstay in India’s sporting landscape.
